The history of the building where Mercer Hotel Madrid is located dates back to the early years of the last century, when it was built to house the Spanish Sugar General Society headquarters. The state-owned company kept its office there for decades with two extensions in 1928 and 1956 to accommodate its laboratories. With more than 5,500sqm, the property is included in the General Catalogue of Protected Buildings.
Following the loss of the last Spanish colonies, a majority of Spanish sugar manufacturers grouped together in the Spanish Sugar General Society (1903-1916). The Society was specialized in the beet sugar manufacturing and, at the time of its creation, it controlled 80% of sugar factories and around 98% of national sugar production, which is why the Society was soon nicknamed “the trust”.
Mercer Hotel Madrid building was designed in 1905 by Enrique Mª Repullés y Vargas (1845-1922) -the official architect of the Royal Family and the Toledo Archdiocese-. The work combines neoclassical and neo-Mudejar elements, a characteristic fusion of the eclectic style in the early 20th century.
In the 21st century, the comprehensive rehabilitation project was entrusted to the RCCyP Architecture studio led by Luís Galiano, author of singular projects as the Madrid Music Palace. During this process, original architectural elements such as pavements, ceilings, carpentry details, as well as the roof, marble staircase and historic elevator have been restored in collaboration with the General Directorate of State Heritage.
Projects developped by Andreu Carulla Studio -one of the great names in contemporary design and recognized with the National Design Award (2014)- seek authenticity and opt for harmonious and versatile works that do not impose a certain style and do not compete for attention, but rather become beautiful, silent and long-lasting solutions.
Providing timelessness, sensitivity and sustainability of materials and processes, Carulla's principles match the Mercer Hoteles philosophy based on discreet luxury, timeless design, architectural heritage enhancing as well as past and present coexistence.
In this sense, Mercer Madrid interior design is conceived as a return to the origins, focusing on the soul of the place through the honesty of the materials and artisan art: Beauty and purity to transmit history through a luxury experiences collection, in 21st century Madrid.
